Alcohol and Drug Rehab Success Rates

How Do Rehabs Measure Quality?
Treatment centers use different measures to determine success, so it’s important to ask how long rates are tracked, how many repeat patients the facility has, and whether the center takes relapse into account. You can also talk to doctors, counselors, and former patients to get a sense of which programs offer quality treatment. Look for certifications such as CARF and The Joint Commission.

When looking for addiction treatment, people usually ask treatment centers about their success rates. These success rates are among the many factors that should be taken into account when considering an alcohol and drug rehab center; however, a high success rate isn’t necessarily the best indicator of quality, particularly since the available statistics are sometimes unclear.

What Do Success Rates Mean?

It’s important to note that there is no uniform standard for rehabilitation centers to measure success. Some treatment centers quote success rates simply for completion of treatment, while others follow up with patients months or years later to ask how they are doing. Simply asking a former patient might not be an effective way to determine success rates, and some rehab centers follow up with family members and doctors also. Be sure to ask how success rates are determined, and how often former patients report on their progress.

Rates Might Be Deceptive

Success rates listed as high as 90 percent may be misleading. These rates are usually determined with little criteria for long-term success. Even with the best treatment, many patients relapse at some point, and often a second course of treatment is needed to further recovery. Ask how long rates have been tracked, how many repeat patients come back to rehab and if relapse is considered in factoring success rates.

How Else Can I Determine the Quality of Treatment?

Ask about the experience level of the treatment center’s doctors, staff and counselors. Extra certification and years of experience are good signs of quality. Outside certification from an unbiased source such as CARF or The Joint Commission is a mark of quality.

Personal recommendations and testimonies are a great way to determine success rates. Don’t be afraid to ask to talk to former patients. Ask local doctors and hospitals what their opinion is of a particular rehab center. If you already have a personal doctor with whom you’ve discussed your addiction, ask him or her if the program is question is a good fit for you.

Individualized treatment that is suited to your specific needs is an important part of success in treatment. Dual diagnosis treatment, gender-only treatment, and treatment for specific drugs may be more beneficial for particular patients.

Other Factors That Influence Recovery Success

Success rates, even when fairly accurate, are not the only consideration for a successful recovery. Personal effort in recovery and a positive attitude are important for success. Some factors than increase the success of recovery include:

  • Attending treatment for 90 days or more
  • Participating in Alcoholics Anonymous meetings (or other community meeting) after treatment
  • Having a supportive family or home environment
  • Receiving individualized treatment

Your own effort will be far more helpful in furthering your recovery than simply attending a rehab program with a high success rate. By paying attention to the quality of care you will receive at rehab and committing to working towards your recovery, you can quit using and regain your life and health.
