Exclusive Non-12-Step Treatments for Atheists

There are some people who realize they have a drug or alcohol addiction, but are unsure what to do next.

Although there are many types of rehab facilities available, many focus on religion or “a higher power.” This is especially true for groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and faith-based treatment centers. What does one do if they have a drug or alcohol problem but are atheist?

Atheist Treatment Options

Finding an atheist-based or secular form of treatment is possible. They may be difficult to find, but they do exist. Some of the more popular ones include Save Our Selves (SOS) and SMART Recovery.

Save Our Selves is an alternative to Alcoholics Anonymous. While many people may feel uncomfortable with AA’s religion-based values, Save Our Selves serves to focus on sobriety without God or any other higher power. According to their website, Save Our Selves also focuses on giving credit to the individual for progress made toward sobriety. Although the program is not religion-based, those who are religious are welcome to attend as well. Meetings are free and anonymous in order to protect the privacy of the members.

Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) Recovery is similar to Save Our Selves in that the program focuses on self-empowerment. However, it does not focus on atheism or non-religious behavior. Members take control of their situation and are responsible for their own actions. According to SMART Recovery’s website, the program is based on scientific research and as such, is always evolving in order to stay current. The program utilizes a four-point system that allows people to overcome all kinds of addictions. These four points focus on motivation, coping skills, behavior management and living a balanced life.

These two programs have taken the 12-step program and made adjustments to it to remove references of God and a higher power. However, they all have the same goal: to help those addicted to drugs and alcohol get control of their addictions and live sober lives. It all comes down to the will and determination to become clean and sober, as well as the ability and need to receive support from others in the same situation.

Finding the Right Drug or Alcohol Rehab

The Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration offers a treatment locator that can help you find the right treatment program based on various criteria. Whether you are atheist or have special situations, you can find a treatment option near you. Here are some specific treatment types you can search for:

  • Those for pregnant women
  • Teen or senior treatment
  • Hearing-impaired programs
  • Programs for those with dual diagnoses
  • Centers for those who speak a language other than English
  • Programs for those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered

Researching Atheist Recovery Options

Although just two types of atheist substance abuse treatment programs are mentioned above, there may be other options near you. Do not be afraid to seek recovery because of your fear of or disinterest in religion. There are many facilities that do not actively promote their non-religious treatment methods, but they still could be a good match based on your needs. We can help you find the right option for you. Call us today and get connected to numerous recovery options in your area.

Remember, there is hope for everyone, no matter what religious preferences they practice or do not practice.
